“Mesoamerican crop wild relatives conservation planning workshop”
The workshop took place in México City, México, June 19-21, 2018.
Aim of the workshop: To define, with the participation of specialists, the necessary variables to develop a zonation to guide conservation of wild relatives of Mesoamerican crops.
Participants: A total of 30 specialists from México, El Salvador and Guatemala, and 12 project collaborators from IUCN, CONABIO and the University of Birmingham participated in this workshop.
During the workshop, the environmental, social and biological criteria to be considered for generating conservation scenarios to represent genetic diversity of crop wild relatives were discussed. The technical working group in Mexico proposed a novel approach to incorporate proxies of genetic diversity in such analyses to guide in situ and ex situ conservation efforts, overcoming the lack genetic diversity data.
